A long history of patrolling with SAABs

https://www.saabplanet.com/saabs-from-aspen/

The Aspen Police Department in Aspen , Colorado has had a long history with Saab Cars (1974-2005). Saab as a police vehicle in America are used only in two cities. The resort towns of Vail and

Aspen   used Saab sedans and hatchbacks (900, 9000, 9-5…) as their standard patrol car for over 25 years .

The first imports were Red Audis, then we changed to Red Saabs , then they went to B lue Saabs . Aspen was the first ski area to have imported Police cars , with Vail following a few years later.

This was part of Chief Marty Hershey’s efforts to “ de-redneck” the Police Department and change the image. Witnesses say that this time most people remember thier change to Levis and Levis Jackets, sportiff shorts in the summer, and Saabs .

I love this line

It was a very slow bankruptcy as they’ve used SAABs from 1974 up to 2005.

For mere mortals, yes, but not in the rarified air of obscene amounts of property tax.

The Gulf Stream Council, BSA in Palm Beach used to give Land Rovers to their district executives as company cars, which was obviously a terrible idea.

Albany County Sheriff’s Office here in NY had some, too. Though, I do believe they were mainly just D.A.R.E. cars.

Buddy of mine from Breckinridge has one. Says it’s the turbo that allows good performance at elevation. All the elevation changes from 4k to 12k  feet and there’s still plenty of power.

I loved the 9000s. Father worked for Malcolm Wilson SAAB out at Careless, just outside the city. He's take out the courtesy cars to the owners and bring the owners cars in for servicing, and he'd open the car up on those twisty country roads to the dealership.

Mine was a total basket case, 3 different colors (+rust!) and I burnt a lot of money on it before I finally called it, but I had never seen anything like it before and I still love them. If I ever get to a place in life where I can have a project car, that would be high on my list.
